The signals generated by detector arrays are normally
very weak. Therefore, the first amplification should
be done as close to the array as possible. In addition
the array needs a mechanical mount and an electronic
interface. All these functions are provided by a special
preamplifier board that does a lot more that just pre-amplify
the generated signal. Additional functions like digital
signal conditioning or power supply support tasks may
be located on the preamplifier board as well.
Since there
are many different types of detector array on the
market, it is necessary to match the preamplifier
to the electronic interface.
The output of a preamplifier is the signal for the
Front End Electronics. A major advantage of separating
the digital functions of the FEE from the pre-amplification
stage is the prevention of interference between digital
signals and the weak analog ones.
