Examples of Applications in Agriculture

Healthy plants, high yields and a constant optimization of the processes are of major
interest in the agricultural industry. A fast and precise analysis technology is required in
order to ensure optimal yield and a continuous quality of the plant population during the
entire phase of growth. In this context, NIR spectroscopy offers major advantages
compared to competing analytic methods. Real-time data acquisition and analysis allow continuous monitoring of growth, harvest and processing.

The research project of the faculty of agricultural technology at Humboldt University in
Berlin and CLAAS SE GmbH demonstrated the future potential of the NIR technique, as it
allows you to separate grain by defined quality parameters during the harvest procedure.

Field Spectroscopy

The spectral measurements of plants provide valuable infor-
mation about the vegetation status and the content of different plant ingredients. The generated spectra are interpreted and generate quantitative data about e.g. the nitrogen need, maturity, water content and biomass. The measurements are carried out directly on the field, where the plants are monitored over the entire growth phase.

The HandySpec® Field as well as the AgroSpec® are qualified for this application and can be configured for different wavelength ranges.

Biomass and Moisture Analysis

The rising demand on biogas stimulates the need for analytical methods which allow the monitoring of the entire process from harvest to biogas production. NIR spectroscopy is a powerful measurement tool for moisture and biomass. The NIRON re-
flection measuring head can be attached either on the harvesting machine or directly in the biogas facility. Thus complete quality control of the biomass is ensured. The NIRON reflection head is optimized for strongly structured samples such as silage. Exact reproducible results are obtained by an automatic internal reference panel.

Remote Sensing

In remote sensing applications the spectral data of a satellite is correlated with ground measurements (Ground Truthing). As a result the generated calibration model enables monitoring biophysical and geophysical changes over time. Furthermore the soil quality can be measured before sowing and changes during the entire growth phase can be monitored.

Depending on the area of application a portable spectrometer system of the HandySpec® family or an AgroSpec® spectrometer system can be used. The AgroSpec® can directly be mounted on a tractor or harvester.

Optimization of the Fertilizer Discharge

The N-Sensor detects the chlorophyll content of plants, determines the nutrient requirements and controls the Nitrogen fertilizer dispenser while being driven through a field. The measurement system is ideally matched to the extreme conditions such as humidity, dust, high mechanical stress, and electronic interference as well as misuse. The N-Sensor was developed for Yara Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, transferred to production and manufactured in quantity by tec5. The N-Sensor is available in two types, a passive and an active version. The passive sensor uses the sunlight as light source, whereas the active sensor possesses its own light source.
